5 Tips To Extend the Life of Your Mattress

Sounds counterproductive that a retail store will teach you how to keep your mattress longer, therefore, buying fewer mattresses. Below are a few tips you can start doing to help your current mattress last longer, or things you can do to keep your new mattress for much longer.

1. Protect
Always have some form of removable protection for your mattress. Any kind of mattress protector that allows for air flow, while being a water proof barrier will work great. Liquid or accidents are one of the most common reasons people prematurely throw out their mattress. Acid from liquids can break down foams faster. Spills can cause odor and staining and even mold in some cases. A removable barrier can help protect against that and removable so you can wash with your linens. 2. Keep Fresh Linens
Washing your linens regular helps with a wide arrange of things. Your body produces oils and transfers to your sheets which ultimately gets to your mattress. Washing your linens helps remove oil and dust from your sheets which will ultimately leach to your mattress. The added benefit of removing the linens is it allows your mattress to breath. This is another key component of letting your mattress rebound from sleeping and removes any added moisture from your mattress.




3. Rotate or Flip  Unless it is a pure latex mattress, you will need to have ongoing maintenance of your mattress. A simple rotation or flip (if you have a 2 sided mattress), can greatly improve the life of your mattress. When you don't rotate it often, one side of your mattress is adjusted to your body while the other side remains untouched. Rotate about every 3-4 months to break in the mattress evenly.

4. Watch out for Pest
Whether you are clean freak or not, doesn't make you immune to bed bugs. We have seen mattresses all the way up to $8,000 be tossed out because of bed bugs. The house was immaculate, but became infested. Bed bugs are notorious travelers. They hitch rides at airports, hotels, and many other places. You can typically find bed bugs in seams, behind headboards, and other tight quarters that aren't typically clean. As soon as you get home from travel, immediately put everything in the washer. Dry what you can on the hottest setting. Typically bed bugs and insects are killed at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Following a few precautions can protect  your entire home from these hard to kill & expensive pest.

5. Clean Your Mattress
I know, not another thing I need to clean, but hear us out. The mattress is one of your most expensive items in your home typically. A simple vacuum of your mattress and a deodorizer can greatly increase your mattress. Use only the appropriate upholstery attachments to vacuum. Pay special attention to seams and tape edges where dirt is commonly built up. If you want to go the extra step of deodorizing, use something like baking soda and sprinkle it on the mattress before hand. Test a small are if you are worried about possible damages. Don't use attachments with rollers, only attachments that creates suction. If you want to scrub the cervices, use some sort of soft bristle brush.

If you have a mattress that looks like a topographical map or has a funky smell, these steps really won't do much good. If you wake up with constant back pain or feel like you're sleeping on the side of a triangle, you mattress has ridden off into the sunset without you.
